MAN — All in all, last season was a good one for the Man High School football team.

After playing in the Single A ranks for more than a decade and having some success there with an appearance in the 2009 Wheeling Super Six, the Hillbillies made its return to Class AA football.

ASHLAND — Ashland High School head coach Tony Love couldn't have asked for much more from his 2016 team. Now, Love is looking to build on the momentum to carry the Tomcats into the 2017 season.

RED JACKET — To say first-year head coach Joey Fields has some big shoes to fill is an understatement. He takes over for longtime coach Yogi Kinder as Mingo Central High School enters its seventh season as still a relatively new consolidated program.

VAN - The last time Shane Griffith had a first-team all-state running back to work with, it resulted in the best individual and team performance in the history of that school's football program.

LOGAN - Quantity does not necessarily equate to quality. The Logan High School football team may be smallish in numbers with 40 players on its roster heading into the 2017 grid season, but the Wildcats have talent and hope to notch above .500 and sneak into the Class AA playoff chase.

NAUGATUCK - As veteran football coach Tony Clusky enters his 34th year on the sidelines, he hopes to lead Tug Valley to the playoffs one more time. Clusky has had success in the past as an assistant coach at Matewan, a head coach at Williamson and now at Tug Valley with several playoff teams and all-state players on his resume. He has been head coach for the Panthers for seven seasons.

PHELPS, Ky. - Former University of Kentucky star David Jones enters his second season as head coach of the Phelps Hornets, where he's working to rebuild the Class A program in rural Pike County, Ky.

GOODY, Ky. — Belfry has become a football program that doesn’t rebuild; it usually just reloads. The well is not exactly dry, but the Pirates did lose several great players due to graduation. Eight of those players are now playing college football this fall — four at the Division 1level.
