The annual Mingo County Middle School Basketball Tournaments for both the girls and boys will be played at the Williamson Field House.

Gilbert Middle School is the host this year. Due to a conflict in scheduling at Mingo Central High School, the basketball events will be played at the historic venue that has hosted many tourneys through the years.

The girls' tourney will be Feb. 4, 7 and 9. The boys' tourney will be Feb. 11, 14 and 16. (Monday, Thursday and Friday each week) The two top seeds will get a first round bye, with the first-round action seeing the No. 6 seed taking on the No. 3 seed and the No. 4 and 5 seeds will play. The winners of the first round will move on to the semi-finals and then the consolation and championship games will be on the final day of each event.

... 2019 Simpkins Law Office Hatfield McCoy Shootout will be played Friday, Jan. 11, and Saturday, Jan. 12, at the Field House. It will featuring 12 boys high school basketball games, four on Friday and eight on Saturday. Tickets are $8 for each session.

Chris Anderson of WVU 247 says 5-star offensive tackle Darnell Wright of Huntington High School has said he is more interested in WVU after the coaching change. Wright is the number 10 overall recruit in the nation, and the number one tackle per 247 sports.

He played against Belfry in the Pike County Bowl at CAM Stadium last season. This would be a huge recruit for new WVU Coach Neal Brown. Stay tuned.

The West Virginia Secondary School Activities Commission (WVSSAC) has announced that Marshall University will be the host for the 2019 WV High School State Cheerleading Championships on December 14, 2019. The event has long been held at the Charleston Coliseum and Convention Center, but will now be held at Marshall University.

The W. Va. State High School Cheerleading Championships are held annually and showcase both regional winners and runners up in each classification from high school cheer teams across the state. Teams compete in a technical cheer routine as well as an open routine to determine the overall champion. The 2018 winners were Tug Valley in Class A, Winfield in Class AA, and Wheeling Park in Class AAA.

Several promotions have been announced for upcoming WVU men's basketball games during Big 12 play.

The WVU-Kansas game on Saturday, Jan. 19, at 2 p.m., is Stripe the Coliseum, presented by CEC. Fans sitting in even-numbered sections and WVU students are encouraged to wear Gold to the game. Fans sitting in odd-numbered sections are encouraged to wear Blue to the game.

The fan-favorite magical act of 'Quick Change' will be back for a Coliseum halftime performance for WVU's Big Monday matchup with Baylor on Jan. 21.

The Mountaineers' home game on Saturday, Feb. 2, against Oklahoma is men's basketball alumni weekend. The WVU Varsity Club will recognize former players in attendance at halftime.
