KNOTT COUNTY, Ky. - On Sunday June 16th the Tug Valley Bass Anglers held their fourth tournament of the 2019 season on Carr Fork Lake, which is located east of Hazard along Kentucky State Route 15.
This was a special Father's Day for all fishermen as several fathers and sons shared this beautiful day on the water, but it was a female angler that spoiled the show for all the dads as Anetha Varney claimed the top spot.
Varney narrowly claimed the top spot as her fish weighed in at a total of 6.59 pounds, which was barely heavier than second place Brandon Staten's haul of 6.45 pounds.
The turnout for this tournament was slightly down due to several fishermen having their sons and daughters traveling home for the Father's Day holiday. There were 14 anglers in attendance, and all were eager to get on the water after five weeks off from TVBA fishing.
Carr Fork Lake was at normal pool with water temperatures ranging from 72-76 degrees. The water on most of the lake was clear and became slightly stained in upper areas of the lake.
Weather for the tournament began with mild temperatures in the low 70s with overcast skies.
As the day progressed temperatures began to warm to the mid 80s with overcast skies giving way to bright sunny skies on and off.
Fishing for the tournament was very tough according to Tug Valley Bass Anglers representative Kevin Runyon. Most fish have begun to move to their summer haunts in deeper grass beds and structure. A few smaller fish with the occasional keeper were found early in shallow water.
The pattern for this tournament varied between small finesse baits in deeper structure to larger soft plastics in grass beds. Nine anglers were able to boat keepers in these conditions with a total tournament weight of just over 24 lbs.
