NEW RICHMOND - There are big innings. Then there was the monster that Westside put together in a 21-2 victory against Oak Hill Monday in the first round of the Class AA, Region 3, Section 1 tournament.

The third-inning breakout opened up the game and allowed Westside to cruise into the second round against top-seed Wyoming East.

That frame featured some strangeness, and a lot of running around the bases.

A staggering 22 batters came to the plate in the inning, and 18 runs crossed the plate.

Madison Hicks and Jaeden Fleenor scored three times in the inning and five other players - Torin Morgan, Caitlin Bleigh, Jaiden Cline, Madison Haught and Rachel Toler scored two runs.

All nine in the order scored.

There were nine hits in the inning, the big one being a two-run home run by Hannah Paynter, the first of her career.

There were five fielder's choices during the inning and none resulted in an out, and four of the runners scored.

"That's the biggest inning we've had this season, by far," coach Darren Blankenship said. "I think we went around our order, what, three times?"

Madison Hicks led the onslaught, in which everyone had at least one hit, with a 4 for 5 showing, including a double and she sued three runs and drove in three more.

The game was close early, with Savannah Holbrook homering for Oak Hill to give the Red Devils a 1-0 lead. Morgan evened things for Westside in the bottom of the inning when she scored on a wild pitch.

In the second, Oak Hill retook the lead when Abby Ward singled and two sacrifice bunts moved her around to third before No. 9 hitter Chloe Atha scored her with a single.

That set the stage for the third.

"I think it took us a couple of innings to get used to her timing," Blankenship said. "We're used to a little faster pitching. Once we settled in, we were OK."

In the second game the Renegades were forced to refocus on that fast pitching, that of Wyoming East's Holly Brehm and her repertoire of pitches, including a fastball with velocity reaching the mid 60s.

There were no big innings to be found as Brehm pitched a no-hitter and was two seventh inning walks from a perfect game in Wyoming East's 5-0 victory.

"That's a big adjustment," Blankenship said. "You go from slower pitching, I'm guessing upper 40s to lower 50s to low 60s and that's a big adjustment for the hitters. Not taking anything away from Holly, she's a good pitcher."

She finished with a no-hitter and shutout, retiring 19 in a row before Jaeden Fleenor drew a one-out walk. Torin Morgan then reached on a fielder's choice when Fleenor was forced at second, and Emmy Prichard walked. Brehm recorded another strikeout to end the game.

"It was a little (disappointing)," Brehm said of just missing the perfect game. "I've done that two to three times over the four years, had a perfect game and give up a walk."

"She hit a lot of her spots and really came out here and did what she had to do," catcher Paige Laxton said.

Westside's Caitlin Bleigh nearly matched Brehm, shutting down the Warrior bats through five innings. Big, run-scoring doubles by freshman Olivia Hylton and senior Kelsey Green highlighted the sixth, when Wyoming East had four of its seven hits.
