Do you know or suspect there is a Pilgrim ancestor in your family tree? The Society of Mayflower Descendants in the State of West Virginia was established in 1948. The society will have a relaunching meeting commemorating the 70th anniversary of the Society of Mayflower Descendants in the State of West Virginia. The Dutch Treat luncheon will be at 1 p.m. on Saturday, June 8, at Panera Bread Restaurant, Charleston Town Center Mall (Civic Center side/Clendenin Street). The speaker is Dr. George Garmany, Governor General of the GSMD speaking on the society and the 400th anniversary of the landing at Plymouth in 2020. The fourth annual Carrie Anne Scott Memorial Scholarship Little Coal River Float will take place on Saturday, June 8, at the Lick Creek Stream Access in Danville. The event will begin with lunch at 12:30. There is a $20 fee per person, or a family rate of $50. Kayak rentals will be available the day of the event, and transportation to and from your vehicle from the access points will be available as well. The event will culminate at the newly renovated stream access at the Donald R. Kuhn Juvenile Center. It is estimated that the float will take approximately three hours to complete. The Carrie Anne Scott Memorial Scholarship was created by the family to provide students scholarship opportunities to attend Southern West Virginia Community and Technical College. 36th annual Bear Hole Race at Twin Falls State Park, Mullens. Entry fee: 10K, 5K, 5K race/walk: $25 by May 31; $35 June 1 through race day. All paid applicants will receive a T-shirt at registration, sizes are not guaranteed. Online registration is available. Registration begins at 7 a.m.; race begins at 8 a.m. Lower end of golf course parking lot. New this year 5K Race Walk: Anyone participating in the 5K Race Walk must walk the entire race, or be disqualified without refund.

JULY 6

The annual Oceana Heritage Festival is planned for 6 to 10 p.m. on July 6 in Gilliland Park, Oceana. There will be free pizza and watermelon at 6 p.m., a free concert at 7 p.m., and fireworks at about 9:30 p.m. Chamber of Commerce Members are welcome to setup a booth on the tennis court during the Heritage Festival to let visitors know more about your business. Hosted by the Oceana Chamber of Commerce.
