GILBERT - The Mingo County School System scheduled an auction Thursday morning for the old Gilbert school property.

However, the property did not sell, according to Mingo County Superintendent of Schools Don Spence. The reserve was for $125,000, and that is where the minimum bid should have started.

Only one person has shown interest in the property.

The old brick building served as Gilbert High School in years past and then served as the middle school. When Mingo Central was formed and four high schools consolidated, including Gilbert, the students moved to the current location, which formerly served as the new Gilbert High School.

The old school building was vacated this past summer after the elementary students were consolidated into the current Gilbert Middle School to form Gilbert PK-8.

Spence said it had not been discussed what the money would be used for when and if the old Gilbert school is sold. He said the matter will be discussed at a future board meeting.

Some of the money received from the sale of the old Williamson High School property was allotted to go toward athletic facilities at Tug Valley and Mingo Central, including new softball and baseball fields.
