KIMPER, Ky. - The shooting death of a teenager Wednesday night in the Kimper community of Pike County remains under investigation by Kentucky State Police, though it has been determined to have been an accident.
News media outlets report 16-year-old Gabrielle May "Gabbi" McCoy died at her home from a gunshot wound. Pike County Deputy Coroner Zeb Hamilton said McCoy was accidentally shot by her 18-year-old sister at her home in the Kimper community.
Her body was taken to Frankfort, Kentucky, for an autopsy.
State police said in a statement that the shooting happened while the firearm was being examined. No charges were filed and state police officials say despite the investigation, none are anticipated.
According to KSP reports, around 10 p.m. Wednesday, troopers and EMS crews responded to a home on Long Fork in Kimper after receiving reports of a shooting. Once they arrived, they discovered McCoy had been shot. She was taken to Pikeville Medical Center where she was pronounced deceased.
McCoy would have been a senior at Phelps High School this fall and was a member of the basketball team.
