LOGAN – The Lady Miners of Mingo Central won their opener in the Class AA sectional tournament beating Wayne 57-37 Monday night at the Logan Memorial Fieldhouse.

“We moved the ball and shot the ball better tonight against a zone than we have in a long time. We are finally starting to understand that to beat a zone, you must move the ball and turn the defense and then you hit gaps for good shots,” said Mingo Central coach David Hanshaw. “We did that tonight. I believe we might be peaking at the right time. We will see if that’s an accurate statement come tonight.”

Sophomore center Ashley Curry scored a game-high 18 points and pulled down seven rebounds to lead the Lady Miners. Kiearia Hammond had double figures with 11 points, while Chrissy Farmer scored seven points and the senior point guard dished out seven assists.

Hannah Church and Brittany Stumbo each added six for MCHS.

Gue and Ferguson each scored 10 to lead the Lady Pioneers.

Mingo Central will play again tonight for a chance to reach the Class AA sectional finals at the Logan Fieldhouse. They take on No. 1 seed Tolsia at 6 p.m., while Scott vs. Chapmanville at 8 p.m. The two winners will play for the sectional championship on Friday at 7 p.m.
