EAST RIDGE – The Belfry Middle School Pirates made it a sweep by winning the Pike County basketball championship Monday night pounding Millard 63-32.

Belfry won the county title in football last fall and then went on to win the state championship.

The Pirates are coached by Mike Hylton. Big Cole Bentley led the way in the title game with 10 points and 15 rebounds, while Andrew Fletcher fired in 15 points, Austin Woolum added 12 and Devin Varney chipped in 11. Other scoring for BMS saw Cameron Catron 4, Jarrett James 4, Braxton Miller 3, Ryan Jesse 2 and Corbin Harris 2.

The Pirates were 7-10 from 3-point range for 70 percent. BMS forced Millard into 21 turnovers. They were also 14-16 at the free throw line for an outstanding 87 percent.

In the semi-final game Belfry got by Pikeville 47-41. Scoring in that game saw James with 20, Bentley with 10, Catron with 8, Woolum 3, Fletcher 4 and Varney 2.

The Pirates defeated Shelby Valley in first round action 47-26. Bentley had a double-double with 11 points and 12 rebounds. The big post player also blocked six shots. James also had a double-double with 10 points and 10 boards. Other scoring in that game was Fletcher 9, Catron 8, Miller 3, Varney 2, Dove 2 and Woolum 2.

Belfry will now head to the state tournament.
