GILBERT — The Gilbert Town Council met Wednesday, Nov. 7, and discussed a few topics of note during a shortened meeting.
Reuben Mitchell told the council that he had received funding from the Mingo County Commission for next year’s “Skirmish on the River,” Gilbert’s Civil War reenactment.
Mitchell pitched the idea for the Skirmish in late 2011 to the council, which gave him its support. The Skirmish took place April 27 - 29 this year.
According to Mayor Vivian Livingood, Mitchell said that people had been recently contacting him, asking about the next Skirmish and that they looked forward to coming back to Gilbert for it.
This year’s reenactment was a major success, Livingood said.
She said that the public was lined up and down the road the entire weekend it took place.
Among the many things available for people to enjoy at the reenactment, one of the most popular features were the learning stations, which taught people how life was during the Civil War.
“There were soldiers telling stories, telling people how they would cook and eat, how much they could carry around with them and more,” Livingood said in April. “The women were wearing costumes from the era. It was amazing.”
A total of 78 actors were in attendance for this year’s reenactment.
She told the Daily News that the 2013 reenactment would take place April 26 - 28, at the Larry Joe Harless Community Center bottom in Gilbert.
The mayor also said that the council discussed the town’s Christmas parade, which is set for Dec. 2. She said that lineup begins at 2 p.m. with the parade itself starting at 3 p.m. Andrea Slone will be coordinating the event. Livingood said that if anyone wanted to participate to call town hall at 304-664-9625.
She said that no grand marshal had yet been chosen.
