Emmett Q. Murphy Sr., 80, of McCarr, Ky., departed this life on Tuesday October 23, 2012, at the South Williamson, Ky., Appalachian Regional Hospital.

A son of the late Hester Parker Murphy Casey and Fred Murphy, Emmett was born on November 17, 1931, at McVeigh, Ky.

In addition to his parents he is preceded in death by his stepfather John Casey; brothers, Jimmy and Robert Murphy; sisters, JoAnn Mounts and Betty Coleman; son Emmett Murphy; and daughter Emma Marcum; several nieces, nephews, and a great-grandchild.

Emmett was a Army Veteran having served in the Korean Conflict. Emmett was also a family man very involved with those he loved and enjoyed having his family close by. Having worked for over 40 years Emmett retired from the N&W railroad company which later became the N&S railroad company.

Those left to share and cherish his memory include his loving wife, Janet Duty Murphy; daughters, Sharon (Doug) Estepp, Mary (Steve) Coleman, Lesia (Paul) Runyon, and Hattie (Damon) Runyon all of McCarr; sons, Kevin (Sherri) Murphy of Aflex, Ky., Robert (Brenda) Murphy of Stone, Ky., Jackie (Kim) Murphy of Hardy, Ky., and Josh (Hilary) Murphy of Matewan; brothers, Jack Murphy of Edgarton, and Bill Casey of McCarr. Emmett is also survived by 16 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren; and his best friends Perry Daniels and Sharon Blankenship whom he thought of as his very own son and daughter.

A memorial service honoring the life of Emmett will be held on Friday October 26, beginning at 1 p.m., at the Chambers Funeral Services’ Chapel with Pastor Carl Butler officiating and in honoring the request of Emmett, he will be cremated. The family will begin receiving friends on Friday October 26, beginning at noon until time of service.

Arrangements are under the direction of Chambers Funeral Services, Inc., of Matewan.
