With over 30 years coaching experience, five of those at the helm of Burch High School, Coach Butch Joplin feels his squad is prepared to defeat Betsy Layne.
“I’ve watched them scrimmage a couple of games,” he told the Daily News. “They are a pretty scrappy team. We have to play and play hard to beat them.”
Joplin said the Bobcats are “pretty predictable on offense.” Although, he does believe Betsy Layne has a good quarterback in senior Nathan Martin as well as RB Casey Adkins.
“They are strong and quick but I think we have the speed and quickness to match up with them,” he said.
But with a solid defensive line in Blake Hall, A.D. Muncy and Brandon Estepp with Brandon King stepping in to help, Martin may have his hands full if Betsy Layne cannot answer with protection for the veteran QB.
This week, Joplin is readying his squad for either a 4-3 or a 5-3 defense he expects his opposition to play. He said Betsy Layne played a 4-3 D during scrimmages this summer but last year the Bobcats played a 5-3 against the Bulldogs. Joplin is taking no chances as he prepares for both.
The Bulldogs lost their starting QB from last season but Joplin doesn’t see this as a weakness as junior Gabriel Vinson is ready to take the snaps.
“He is a real good leader and a fine quarterback,” Joplin commented. “He makes real good decisions.”
The Bobcats are coming off of a 34-19 loss to Bishop Brossart last weekend. The 2010 squad lost 10 players from a team that defeated the Bulldogs last year 35-22. Burch ended the season with a 5-5 record.
The Bulldogs play their first home game Sept. 11 against Eminence, Ky. Their first game against a county rival will not come until Oct. 1 when BHS travels to Gilbert to take on the Lions at 7:30 p.m.
