The Community Trust Bank/WYMT-TV Pike County Bowl will celebrate 26 years of high school football Aug. 27-28.

This year’s bowl will open at the Johnson Brothers Athletic Complex at Shelby Valley High School on a Friday night with Shelby Valley suiting up against the Warriors of East Ridge. Game time is set for 6:05 p.m. Following that game, the Belfry Pirates will smash helmets with Covington Holy Cross around 8:35 p.m.

On Saturday, Pike County Central takes on an eager Phelps squad with Pikeville High School facing off against Boyd County afterwards.

Over the years, the bowl has raised close to $600,000 which is distributed to all the high schools throughout Pike County.

Football isn’t the only festivities taking place during that weekend. Eight queen candidates are selected from the area schools with one chosen as the Pike County Bowl Queen. The winner is chosen by independent outside judges and is awarded a $1,500 scholarship. The 2009 Queen is Hannah Thompson.

The girls selected to represent their schools this year are: Belfry High School’s Alexis Howard, Boyd County Tori Season, East Ridge Jorydan Bell, Phelps Mikayla Charles, Pike County Central Emily Hunt, Pikeville High School Kathleen Smith and Shelby Valley Andrea Pavlik.

This year the Legends Award will be presented to Freddie Maggard, former Cumberland High and University of Kentucky great. The award was created to honor those whose lives made a difference to the youth that participated in football.

The current Pike County Bowl committee members and advisors are; Chairman Virgil Osborne, Ancie Casey, Brenda Davenport, Brett Keene, Don Batten, Brad Hall, Rodney Ruth, Roger Hopson and Kevin Garris. The committee advisors are Ricky Meade, Carl Tritschler and Jessica Knausz.

The Pike County Bowl was formed in 1985. The Panthers defeated Cumberland High School 27-21 and BHS took one from Somerset 7-6. Participation has grown with each passing year and it has traditionally kicked off the high school football season for the area.

Tickets are on sale at Community Trust Bank locations and Pike County high schools.
