INEZ, Ky. – One man and three women were arrested at separate times July 27-28 by deputies of the Martin County Sheriff's Office.
Charges included drug and motor vehicle violations, public intoxication and endangering the welfare of minors.
– Burgess J. Cantrell, 36, of Johnson Bottom, Inez, was arrested by Sheriff's Deputy Evan M. Norris July 27 on three bench warrants from Martin County. They included possession of a controlled substance, third degree, and possession of a controlled substance, second degree (drug unspecified in either case); and violation of the drug paraphernalia law (buying, possessing). The first two charges were first offenses.
Cantrell also was served bench warrants on charges of operating a motor vehicle while under the influence of alcohol, drugs, etc. (first offense); having no operator's moped license; possession of an open alcohol beverage container in a motor vehicle, which is prohibited; no vehicle registration plates; failure of owner to maintain required insurance, SEC (second offense). and fleeing or evading police on foot (second degree).
– Chief Deputy Tipton responded to a call to the Martin County courthouse on Court Street on July 27 to check out a report of a mother being under the influence of drugs while at the courthouse with her two young sons.
Tipton identified the woman as Annie N. Maynard, 23, of North Wolf Creek Road, Lovely, Ky. When he arrived at the courthouse, he reported seeing the mother carrying two babies, one son a month old and another son 14 months old.
The deputy said the woman was having trouble talking and walking and stated she had taken a Xanax tablet a few hours previously, adding that she also had taken three Floricet pills. She had prescriptions pills in a bottle in her handbag, including three Xanax and one Floricet pill left in another bottle, the deputy reported.
The deputy arrested Maynard on a charge of public intoxication from a controlled substance (excluding alcohol), and another charge of endangering the welfare of a minor (her children).
Arrest
– Deputy Norris served a bench warrant on Debra K. Hammond, 48, of DeLong Fannin Farm, Inez, July 27 on behalf of Johnson County, Ky. It charged the defendant with theft by unlawful taking or disposal from a building. The warrant was signed Jan. 4, 2010 and the officer had no further information on that case.
Incident to Hammond's being served the arrest warrant, Norris reported finding drugs in the side zipper compartment of the woman's purse. He said it contained two blue oval tablets with G3721 on one side, and one Xanax tablet verified by Kentucky Poison Control. The deputy said the suspect also had a prescription bottle containing two mg Xanax and also other prescription bottles in her purse. He said the two tablets did not match any of those prescribed for her although she stated she has a prescription for the medication. Norris charged Hammond with having a prescription controlled substance not in proper container (first offense).
– Deputy Norris was twice dispatched to Austin Drive in Johnson Bottom on July 28 in reference to a domestic altercation. On the first trip, he found Priscilla Stepp, 38, of Omar, W. Va., inside a home but appearing to be manifestly under the influence of some substance.
When the deputy made a second trip to the same residence, he found Stepp outside the home and engaged in a verbal altercation with her sister who lived next door. She told the officer she had known the first time not to be outside or she could go to jail. Norris arrested her on a charge of public intoxication from a controlled substance (excluding alcohol).
