Chafin, 21, died Saturday night after the dirt bike he was riding was struck by a vehicle driven by Ward, 37, of Meador. She is being held in the Southwestern Regional jail on charges of driving while under the influence of drugs or alcohol causing death.
The accident took place on St. Rte. 65. Chafin was pronounced dead at the scene, Mingo County Coroner Mike Casey has sent the body to the Medical Examiner's office in South Charleston for an autopsy. The force of the impact threw him approximately 10 to 15 feet from the point of the collision. Chafin was not wearing a helmet at the time of the accident.
Authorities say Ward left the scene of the accident to go to a nearby residence. Emergency personnel were contacted, and she returned to the scene of the crash.
She was arraigned by Magistrate Dee Sidebottom, who set a full cash bond of $10,000.
The accident is being investigated by West Virginia State Troopers J.K. Weiss and P.J. Dick. Ward's preliminary hearing is scheduled for 9 a.m.
