BELFRY, Ky. - The Belfry High School cheerleading squad was touched by the recent flooding in Pike County, and are working to bring much needed supplies to those who were affected by the disaster.

Shaina Deskins’ best friend, Destiny Hamilton, had family whose family was flooded.

“It really hurt me to see what they were going through,” Shaina said. “I wanted to do what I could to help them.”

So she, along with Belfry’s cheerleading coach Sherry Casey, decided to start at drive to bring badly needed supplies to those who need them.

They are using Facebook to request donations of cleaning supplies and bottled water.

“We have a teacher here at Belfry who lives near his sister, and they both were flooded,” Casey said. “So we are using that home at Coon Creek as a dropping point for supplies.”

Casey is using the cheerleaders’ sense of competition to help in their efforts.

“We are making a challenge to other area squads,” Casey said. “We are asking them to do what they can to gather donations.”
