WILLIAMSON – After a succession of state-appointed school superintendents over the past decade, the Mingo County school system has finally been given a leader of the homegrown variety.

Randy Keathley of Williamson, an educator and school administrator in the Mingo County school system for 30 years, has come into his own – superintendency of the school system in which he grew up.

He knows all of the school system’s good features and the places where improvements can make it even better.

Keathley confirmed Friday that Dr. Steven Paine, West Virginia Superintendent of Schools, had informed him of the decision to place the Mingo native in charge of Mingo County’s school system as successor to David L. Roach, who has been transferred to Lincoln County as superintendent of that school system.

Keathley’s appointment is effective July 1, 2010.

“I feel very honored to be placed in a position of such great responsibility and I pledge that my future administration of the system will merit the confidence invested in me,” said Keathley.

Roach had been superintendent in Mingo County about three months after being appointed to succeed Dwight D. Dials. Keathley said Roach, whose early life was connected to the Williamson area, “has been very complimentary of the Mingo County schools and found many good things to talk about, not only the school system and its students, but the teachers, admininstrators and other personnel involved in its operation.”

Roach was directed by the state superintendent to return to Lincoln County for assignment as administrator there. Keathley noted that Roach was very interested in the history of Mingo County because of his family’s early connections here.

Keatley received his undergraduate degree from Marshall University, Huntington, and also earned a master’s degree in Elementary Education and in Administration.

During his three decades in education, Keathley has served as principal of Williamson Middle School, Williamson Elementary School at Cinderella and Matewan Elementary School.

He has been serving as assistant superintendent for the past 11 years and will continue in that post until taking over his new assignment July 1. His wife, Teria, is diagnostician with the Special Education Department at the central board offices at Cinderella.

In further remarks on his new appointment, Keathley said he feels confident about the future of the county school system. “Together with members of the Mingo County Board of Education, we will seek to enhance the educational opportunities for our students. I have a positive feeling about working with our county board members.”

He said he has worked closely with personnel in the school system and has also been involved in handling details concerning the new Mingo Central High School now under construction on a mountain site between Varney and Red Jacket.

“I am proud of our school system and the skills and advancements in learning provided by our teachers, with supportive personnel also going the extra mile to keep things running,” said the new superintendent.

He also stressed the cooperation received from the business community.

Congratulations to Mr. Keathley. I wonder if he is related to a childhood classmate of mine named "Trinetta Zshawn Keathley". I remember that name because it is most beautiful, and had I had a girl, that would have been her name. Can Daily News ask Mr. Keathley?
