Charges included assault, public intoxication, motor vehicle violations and drug-related offenses.
■ Brent Newsome, 22, of Debord, Ky., was operating a rail buggy on Ky 1714 and Lick Branch Road at 4:11 p.m. on May 29 when he lost control of the vehicle that left the roadway and came to rest at a culvert beside the road.
Sheriff's Deputy Jerry Todd said the driver had a large contusion on his head, and one of the passengers, Sasha Newsome, 20, was airlifted to Cabell Huntington Hospital. A second passenger, a three-year-old child, was checked over by ambulance personnel at the scene.
Brent Newsome was cited to appear in Martin District Court at 9 a.m. June 21 to answer to four charges: failure to register transfer of motor vehicle; no, or expired, Kentucky registration plates; no, or expired, Kentucky registration receipt, and failure of owner to maintain registration of insurance/sec (first offense).
■ Also cited to appear in court at 9 a.m. on June 21 to answer to two charges is Jamie C. Jude, 29, of Inez, Ky. Deputy Todd charged Jude with failure of owner to maintain insurance/sec (first offense) and no license in possession as required by law. The vehicle involved is a 1996 Ford Explorer and the violation occurred on Ky. 908 and Ky. 645 intersection.
The following persons were arrested by sheriff's deputies on various charges as listed:
■ Herbert R. Wood, 41, of Silver Springs, Ma., was arrested June 6 by Sheriff's Deputy Evan M. Norris on a charge of possession of marijuana. The officer's report said Wood had gone to the Big Sandy United States Penitentiary with his friend, Theresa Bennett, who visited her son during visitation hours.
Norris' report stated he detected drug residue on Bennett and that Big Sandy USP staffer Chrystal McKinzie approached Wood in the parking lot. All vehicles/persons on the prison property are subject to search. During a search of Wood's vehicle, McKenzie found a cellophane wrapper containing two partially smoked marijuana joints. Wood stated he had given permission for a search of the vehicle and that the marijuana was his.
■ James Osborne, 29, of Louisa, Ky., was arrested by Deputy W. Horn on a charge of operating a motor vehicle on a suspended or revoked operator's license. Horn was driving around the Inez courthouse when the officer checked out the man's operator's license through Kentucky State Police and confirmed it was suspended.
■ James I. Reed, 37, of Hueysville, Ky., was served two bench warrants by Chief Deputy Bryan Tipton on June 4. Reed was charged with alcohol intoxication in a public place (first and second offenses) and assault, fourth degree) in a domestic violence incident in which there was no visible personal injury. The deputy had no further information on this case.
■ James R. Carter, 45, of Beauty, Ky., was served a bench warrant by Deputy Norris on behalf of Martin County, charging him with assault, fourth degree, resulting in a minor injury. The incident allegedly occurred June 5 on Lower Poplar Fork Road.
■ Ralph McCoy, 56, of Pilgrim, Ky., was arrested June 5 by Deputy Dwayne Bowen on a charge of operating a motor vehicle while under the influence of alcohol, drugs,etc., .08 percent (first offense). McCoy was driving a 1991 GMC Sonoma at the time the officer checked him out at a safety check point on Ky. 1714.
■ Buddy M. Horn, 44, of Inez, Ky., was served a bench warrant by Deputy Jason Wefenstette on June 4, charging him with operating a motor vehicle while under the influence of alcohol, drugs, etc., .08 percent (second offense.) The officer had no further information.
■ Harry M. Maynard, 41, of Inez, Ky., was arrested June 6 by Deputy Jerry Todd on a charge of alcohol intoxication in a public plae (first and second offenses). Todd's report said Maynard was staggering and nearly fell on Himmerville Street when he observed the man, and subsequently failed sobriety tests.
