Born October 28, 1948, in Williamson, he was the son of the late Harold Smith and Ruth Scott Smith.
Rod was a graduate of Williamson High School and Marshall University. He began his business career as a buyer with B & L Furniture Company which later sold to Reliable Stores. He also owned and operated his own firm, R. A. Smith Furniture in downtown Williamson for a number of years. Rod was currently employed by the Appalachian Regional Hospital as manager of the Home Care Stores.
Rod was an active and devoted member of the Sacred Heart Catholic Church. He was an avid golfer and an enthusiastic member of the Marshall University organization, MAD 4 MU. Rod had also served in the Army National Guard.
Rod lived a remarkably full and good life. He loved his family and he was devoted to his friends and patrons. He enjoyed life, he made the most of each day and he did it with a smile and the most pleasant of dispositions. Rod will live on in the hearts all of who had the great pleasure of knowing him.
Rod is survived by his loving and devoted wife, Amber Bailey Smith and his beloved son, Steven Bradley Smith, both of Williamson. He is also survived by his loving sister and brother, Sandy (Larry) Weddington of Ashland, KY and John Bradley (Sharman) Smith also of Williamson, and a God-Daughter, Amy Dizon (Chris)Harrison of Pittsburgh, PA.
The family will receive friends on Monday evening, March 29, 2010, from 6 to 9 pm at Weaver Mortuary in West Williamson. Rosary services are scheduled for 7pm.
The funeral mass will be held on Tuesday morning, March 30, 2010, at 11 am, at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Williamson. Father Rey D. Landicho and Father Paul Wharton will officiate. Entombment will follow at the Mountain View Memory Gardens at Huddy, KY.
Family members and friends will serve as pallbearers.
In lieu of flowers contribution may be made to Sacred Heart Catholic Church, 114 West Fourth Avenue, Williamson, WV 25661 or MAD 4 MU of Marshall University.
