CLARKSBURG, W.Va. (AP) — A foreman accused of forging safety inspection reports at a Patriot Coal Corp. mine is about to enter a plea in federal court.

Forty-year-old John Renner of Granville is set to appear Wednesday before federal Magistrate John Kaull in Clarksburg.

Renner, a foreman at the Federal No. 2 mine near Fairview, has admitted faking records of methane gas levels in sealed sections of the mine.

He says he was pressured by his boss.

Federal regulations have required seal monitoring since a January 2006 explosion in a sealed section of the Sago Mine trapped and ultimately killed 12 coal miners.

But Renner, who is cooperating in a federal investigation, says he was told to shut down production and evacuate only if a federal inspector was watching.
