Phelps started off with a furious first quarter jumping out to a big lead on five consecutive scores and taking advantage of Belfry’s turnovers. The Hornets led by 8 points at the end of the 1st quarter with a score of 20-12.
“We weren’t able to get into the inside post and that’s my fault for us not being able to do that,” said Pirates Head Coach Randy Casey. “That was our game plan: to get inside and not settle for jump shots.”
The game plan appeared to work later in the game as Belfry answered Phelps’ 1st quarter by scoring 11 unanswered points during the 2nd. Belfry’s Jordan Hairston scored 10 points in the 2nd and Jeremy Maynard scored 8. Belfry outscored the Hornets 23-13 in that quarter, taking a 2 point lead into the second half.
In the opening minutes of the third quarter, one of the players responsible for Belfry taking the lead from Phelps, Jeremy Maynard, injured his knee and was out for the rest of the game. Phelps started to push back harder against the Pirates and the Hornets’ Brennen Smith scored 7 of Phelps’ 15 points in the 3rd, giving Phelps a 3 point lead into the 4th.
With Maynard out, Belfry’s Morgan Bentley rose to the occasion offensively scoring 11 of his 13 points during the remaining quarter. That momentum helped Belfry regain the lead and extend it to the 56-67 final score.
Belfry’s Jordan Hairston scored the game high of 18 points for the Pirates. Bentley grabbed 7 rebounds along with his 13 points. Gary Runyon scored 11. Maynard and Jordan Varney both scored 8 points, Joey Pinson scored 7, and Chris Altizer scored 2.
Smith led the Hornets in scoring with 16 points, Trent Maynard scored 14, Austin Campbell scored 12, Tyler Gannon scored 11, Dakota Smith scored 2 points, and Jordan Smith scored 1.
The Pirates out-rebounded the Hornets with 34 rebounds and had fewer turnovers with 17. Phelps had 25 rebounds overall. Brandon Smith grabbed the lion’s share of the Hornets’ rebounds with 10.
