Burch,Williamson move forward

MAN -- The Burch Lady Bulldogs pounded Van, 56-19, in the first round of the Class A sectional tournament at Man High School Monday night and Williamson eliminated Matewan, 58-34.

Burch was led in scoring by Haley Church with 21 points, nine steals and two assists. Next was Hilary Church with 10 points, one rebound and an assist. Bri Smith scored seven, gave five assists, got two steals and a rebound and blocked one shot. Kayla Cisco scored six points, grabbed three rebounds and a steal and gave an assist.

Stephanie Brock scored two points, gave four assists and got four steals and a pair of rebounds. Cayla Hatfield scored two, got four steals and a rebound, gave three assists and blocked one shot.

Brittany Maynard scored two, got five steals and two rebounds, blocked one shot and gave an assist. Miranda Evans scored two, got two steals and a rebound and gave two assists. Brittany Stumbo scored two and reeled in four rebounds. Kaitlyn Lester netted two points. Cheyenne Moore grabbed three rebounds and a steal, blocked a shot and handed off an assist.

The Lady Bulldogs took a 22-2 lead at the end of the first quarter and never looked back as they outscored the Van Lady Bulldogs in every frame to advance in the tournament.

“Anytime you win it’s a good win,” Burch Coach Melvin Cunningham said. “We’re here to win the sectional tournament and this was just a step along the way. Now, we’ve got to get focused to play Man and you have to tip your hat to Man Coach Tonia Ward because she’s done a good job with those girls. We’ll have our hands full stopping Tabby Johnston and Paige Stacy.”

Burch will play Man tonight in the second round of the tourney.

Rebecca Meadows led Van with eight points, while Hannah Brown scored seven. Hillary Hall and Keirsten Vint each scored two.

Williamson 58, Matewan 34

MAN -- The Williamson Lady Wolves got an impressive performance from senior Jessica Fields to beat Matewan, 58-34.

Fields scored 18 points to lead all scorers in the game.

Fellow senior Devan Maynard poured in 13 to help lead the Lady Wolves into the second round of the tournament.

Jessica Sanger was next with 11 points, while Olivia Banks scored seven, Valarie White added six and Taylor Elkins chipped in three.

Matewan was led by senior Shiley Mahon with 15 points. Next was Courtney Lester and Tiffany Lester with six points apiece, Whitney Horton with four and Rachel Clark with three.

Williamson took a 20-8 lead at the end of the first quarter and built a large cushion throughout the game enroute to the 24-point victory.
