INEZ, KY – A spill from a slurry pond at a Martin County coal mine Tuesday morning does not pose any threat to the public health, officials said.

Martin County Emergency Services Director Lee Gauze told the Daily News there was a lot of misinformation about the situation. The mining company, Martin County Coal, had a leaky valve at the impoundment, he said, which was repaired quickly.

“There have been a lot of rumors,” Gauze said. “But it was not a bad spill. We did not evacuate, no actual slurry got into the creek.”

Gauze said the Department of Environmental Protection was working to contain the spill, which consisted of black muddy water.

Calls made by the Daily News to the DEP and Martin County Coal were not answered.
