The Williamson City Council discussed various housekeeping matters during the council’s first meeting of the month Feb. 11.

Councilman York Smith reiterated a motion passed in a previous city council meeting regarding animal control in town. Smith explained that numerous complaints have been received about stray dogs roaming through town and the dog warden will be enforcing Williamson’s leash laws.

Smith also spoke of plans and discussions he has had with Sen. Truman Chafin regarding repairs to the Harvey Street underpass and organizing a truck route to prevent further damage to it. The repairs should begin soon with a possible start during the spring season.

Installation of a lift station to connect five houses on East 7th Avenue to the sewer system was mentioned during the meeting. The station needs to be installed for environmental reasons, but the cost of the station would be approximately $230,000.

Mayor McCormick reminded the public of the continuing NAACP programs each Monday in February at the Williamson City Library to celebrate Black History Month. The programs begin at 5 p.m.

McCormick also urged the public the check on their neighbors during times of inclement weather and to drive carefully on hazardous roads, be it from wintry weather or potholes caused by road maintenance.

The mayor made note of the approval of the installation of a sewer at the Fairview campsite that was made during the city’s utility board meeting.

Williamson Police Chief Roby Pope reminded the council that the next civil service testing date for new applicants to the police department will be held March 12. Interested parties can contact the Williamson Police Department for more information.

A personnel issue was discussed during an executive session as requested by Councilman Rockel, but no action was made by the council during the meeting.

Councilman Rockel also reported complaints she had received regarding vandalism in the West End Cemetery and asked the police department to watch for vandals in the area.
