Williamson NAACP sponsors celebrate Black History Month

The Williamson Branch NAACP and Youth Council, in conjunction with Southern West Virginia Community and Technical College and the Williamson Public Library, will sponsor a series of programs at 5 p.m. each Monday at the library during February designated as Black History Month.

An introduction to the series will be given Feb. 1 and a special presentation for the 21st National African-American Read-In, with other programs to follow in the following weeks.

The Branch will present its annual Black History Month Program, Sunday, Feb. 21 at 3 p.m. at the Logan Street First Baptist Church with guest speaker Coston Davis, president of the W.Va. State Conference of NAACP Branches. Mr. Davis is the director of leadership, mentoring, and judicial affairs at West Virginia State University.

A schedule for the weekly programs is as follows:

Feb. 1

Introduction and program overview with Rev. Gerald Dotson presiding, “African-American Read-In”, book reading and review by Sue H. Jones, poem by Mollie Long, and special music by Audrey Lee.

Feb. 8

SWVCTC – Martin Luther King, Jr. Essay Contest winners and awards with Rev. Joe Moore presiding and providing music.

Feb. 15

A special presentation by WHS-HSTA students sponsored by Sonya Picklesimer with Rev. Robert Settles presiding, and special music provided by Minnie Settles.

Feb. 22

“Plantation Quilts – The McDaniel Secret Quilt Codes” presented by Serena S. Wilson with Rev. G.C. Childress presiding and special music by Edith Childress.
