Forty persons had filed as candidates for various offices in connection with the May 11 Primary Election near the close of the Mingo County Clerk’s office Thursday.

Chief Field Deputy Bridgett Puckett and office staff pointed out that the county clerk’s office will be closed on Saturday, Jan. 30, the final date for filing. The clerk’s office was open for the usual hours today.

Puckett said late filers can mail their notices of candidacies to the clerk’s office but they must be postmarked no later than Saturday in order to be accepted.

Twenty-three persons filed candidacies through the past week with 17 others filing this week. The latest filers include 16 Democrats and one Republican who seek the right to represent their respective districts as members of the Mingo County Democratic or Republican Executive Committee.

None of the latest filers seek nomination to county offices.

Each of the seven county districts have election for a committeewoman or committeeman, according to their gender and political affiliation, Democrat (D) or Republican (R). The latest candidates for committee are as follows:

Lee District:

(For committeewoman): Jearlene Maynard, (D) of Delbarton; Josie A. Sheppard, (D) of Delbarton; and Beulah Vance, (R) of Route 1, Delbarton..

(For committeeman): Lee Goff, (D) of Delbarton; Ken Maynard (D) of Delbarton; Elmer R. Spence, (D) of Delbarton, and Dallas Lee “Big Dal” Toler, (D) of Rural Route 2, Delbarton.

Tug-Hardee District:

(For committeewoman): Lisa F. Kirk, (D) of Lenore, W.Va.

Magnolia District:

(For committeewoman): Henrietta May, (D) of Matewan, W.Va.

(For committeeman): David Justice, (D) of Route 2, Delbarton, W.Va.

Stafford District:

(For committeewoman): Valarie Ann Cline, (D) of Route 13, Gilbert, W.Va.

(For committeeman): Jimmy A. “Big Jim” Hatfield, (D-current Mingo County Court Clerk), of Gilbert, W.Va.

Beech-Ben-Mate District:

(For committeewoman): Tina Louise Abbott, (D) of Wharncliffe, W.Va.

(For committeeman): James A. Bandy, (D) of Meador, W.Va., and Fred Cisco, (D) of Matewan, W.Va.

Kermit-Harvey District:

(For committeeman): Charles “Bucky” Meade, (D) of Breeden, W.Va.

Williamson District:

(For committeeman): Michael G. Brewster, (D) of Williamson, W.Va.
