Teacher, pastor jailed on sex charge

The Mingo County Sheriffs arrested a teacher and pastor for sexual abuse on Friday.

Johnny Ray Dempsey, was arrested for inappropriate contact with a 14-year-old juvenile daughter in June 2009.

Dempsey was arrested on Friday, by Sgt. Joe Smith with the Mingo County Sheriffs Department. He was charged with sexual abuse by a parent and incest.

At the time of the crime, Dempsey was a teacher at Kermit K- and Tug Valley High School and a the pastor of Grace Truth Bible Center, located at Boy Scout Hollow.

Dempsey was arraigned in Mingo County Magistrate Court and received a bond of $100,000 cash only bond.

Dempsey will appear in Magistrate Court for his preliminary trial on Wednesday.

We applaud this very brave young girl for having the courage to speak up and contact police. She is to be commended for her courage, this is an extremely difficult thing for a victim of sexual abuse to do.



...When victims and witnesses speak up, at least there's a chance for healing, justice and prevention. But when victims stay silent, kids keep getting hurt, predators keep assaulting others, and those who've been wounded stay trapped in shame, silence and self-blame.
