The groups had protested their exclusion from a November meeting between politicians and coal industry executives.
U.S. Rep. Shelley Moore Capito attended both meetings. She says there is still a major gap between the industry and environmentalists.
But the 2nd District Republican sees common ground on issues like safety and clarity from federal regulators.
Topics included warning systems for people near coal slurry impoundments.
Maria Gunnoe of the Ohio Valley Environmental Coalition says the dialogue needs to continue.
