WILLIAMSON – Filing of candidacies for office in connection with the May 11 Primary Election continued at a snail’s pace the past week with only six persons adding their names to the list of persons seeking office.
Ås of Friday, 22 persons had become candidates, that figure including the 16 who entered various races during the first week of the filing period.
One week remains of the filing period with Jan. 30 the final day to enter a race in the primary event. Chief Field Deputy Bridgett Puckett and other deputy clerks in the offices of the Mingo County Court Clerk (first floor of the Court House) are handling the filings of candidacies.
John Mark Hubbard, Williamson Democrat and president of the Mingo County Commission, filed notice of his candidacy for nomination and reelection to the commission.during the past week’s filing activity.
The five other filers the past week were from several county districts who seek election to the county Democratic Executive Com-mittee from their respective districts.
Freddie Newsome of West Williamson, a retired educator and incumbent member of the Mingo County Demo-cratic Executive Committee from Williamson District, filed for reelection to that committee this week.
Other incumbents filing the past week for reelection to the Executive Committee from their districts include:
Tug-Hardee District: Jer-ome Marcum, (D), Border-land.
Magnolia District: Rosan-na Sue “Rosie” Crum, (D), Delbarton.
Lee District: Maxine Colegrove, (D), Route 1, Delbarton.
Also filing his candidacy this week was Justin Mar-cum, a Democrat of Williamson, who seeks election to the Mingo County Executive Committee from the 20th Delegate District.
There will be three seats on the Mingo County Board of Education to be filled in the primary event. Those persons will be elected, as will members of the executive committee. Candidates who are nominated for offices in the primary election will then seek election in the Nov. 2 general election.
Besides the Board of Education, Mingo County Commission and executive committee offices, voters will also nominate party candidates for the following offices: County Court Clerk, Circuit Court Clerk, State Senate (6th Senatorial District), and two seats in the House of Delegates from the 20th and 21st districts.
