“Belfry is probably the best team we have played so far this season,” said Cline. “I feel anytime you can play as good as a team as Belfry, and be competitive, it has to help you prepare for other teams during the season.
“My kids knew we were playing one of the best teams in the area, and I was really pleased with the effort they all gave,” Cline continued. “We kept battling and made the game close at the end coming back from double digits. That is all you can ask out of your players.
“Cody Houck had his best game of the season, not only point wise but defensively, and helping with Belfry’s pressure defense.”
Belfry’s Jeremy Maynard scored the game high of 20 points for the Pirates. Other Pirates scorers included: Gary Runyon with 11 points, Jordan Hairston and Morgan Bentley each with 9 points, Jordan Varney had 7, and Chris Alitzer scored 1 point.
Houck scored 18 points for Gilbert, Kyle Smith had 10, Chris Carter scored 8, Josh Carter and Ashton Cline made 7 each, Ryan Altizer netted 5 points, and Corey Robinette scored 4.
Belfry took on Pikeville High School Jan. 19 and will play Phelps Jan. 26 and Matewan Jan. 28 in away games.
Gilbert played Man at home Jan. 19 and will play Mt. View in an away game Jan. 20 and Matewan at home Jan. 21.
