CHARLESTON (AP) — A leading West Virginia legislator wants state regulators to investigate the storm-related power outages that kept thousands of resident out of their homes over the holidays.

Senate Majority Leader H. Truman Chafin has asked the Public Service Commission to look into what he calls a disaster that was waiting to happen.

The Democrat represents parts of southern West Virginia hit hard by the winter weather. An estimated 156,000 Appalachian Power customers in the state lost their electricity over the course of the storm.

Chafin says residents in Mingo and McDowell counties went without electricity for as long as 10 days. He believes dry-rotted lines and trees encroaching on rights of way contributed to the problems.
