Belfry Volunteer Fire Department Chief Nee Jackson said his department received a call just past 6 a.m., Sunday about a structure fire at Stone, near the Red Robin building. The Hatfield and Upper Creek Fire departments were called into assist Belfry.
Water to fight the fire had to be shuttled due to cold weather, as well as tankers of water being brought by the other two departments.
The house was owned by K.E. Matney, and was occupied by Mike Matney, Jackson said. Mike Matney told Chief Jackson he heard “a popping noise” and found flames five feet high. Matney tried to put the fire out with a fire extinguisher, but was unsuccessful, Jackson said.
“When we arrived on scene, flames were coming from the front of the building and several windows had broken,” Jackson said.
After assessing the situation, it was determined there was no one in the house. Firefighters started to make an interior attack to put out the fire, but conditions had deteriorated to the extent that an attack was unsafe, Jackson said.
“I pulled the interior attack team out and we began fighting the fire defensively from outside,” he said.
The house was old, and had out of date wiring, Jackson said.
“Years ago, the building was used as a store and had electrical wiring running across the top of the floor,” he said.
The home, which was uninsured, was a total loss. Firefighters were on scene for five hours.
