PIKEVILLE, Ky. — On the occasion of its 85th Anniversary, Pikeville Medical Center celebrated being named the National Hospital of the Year by the American Alliance of Healthcare Providers (AAHP).

“This award validates what I see every day,” PMC President and CEO Walter May said. “We have positioned ourselves as one of the premiere hospitals in the nation, and I take great pride in saying the very best healthcare in the nation can be found in the mountains of eastern Kentucky.”

The honor of being chosen as Hospital of the Year is the result of strict evaluations of PMC regarding a wide range of standards including performance management, staff development and training and patient education.

The AAHP initially considered 5,800 hospitals across the country for the honor. Of those, 400 met the qualifications to be considered for the award. Among those 400 were The Mayo Clinic, Johns Hop-kins Hospital, Duke Uni-versity Medical Center and Cedars-Sinai Medical Cen-ter.

In recognition of the award the City of Pikeville has declared January to be Pikeville Medical Center Month, In addition, PMC was named one of the nation’s “Best Places to Work in Healthcare” by Modern Healthcare Maga-zine.

“The hospital not only provides a valuable service to the region, it also plays a large role in the corporate makeup of our region and contributes to the quality of life we all enjoy,” said Pikeville City Manager Donavan Blackburn.

Other accolades received included messages from Congressman Hal Rogers and Governor Steve Beshear.
