BICKMORE (AP) — Democratic Rep. Nick Rahall is asking the Army Corps of Engineers to reissue federal permits for a Consol Energy surface mining complex before some 500 employees lose their jobs.

U.S. District Judge Robert Cham-bers recently suspended the operation’s Clean Water Act permits effective Jan 23. In response, Canonsburg, Pa.-based Consol said it will idle the Clay County operation and start layoffs Feb. 7.

Rahall asks the corps to avert layoffs in a letter to assistant Army secretary Jo Ellen Darcy on Thursday. He also urges the agency to speed up processing of all pending mining permits.

Another 79 permits for West Virgi-nia, Kentucky, Ohio and Tenne-ssee are pending before the corps after being delayed at the request of the Environmental Protection Agency.

Lets see, Nick endorses Barack Obama, a man who publicly stated he wishes to bankrupt the coal industry. Next, Nick plays cheerleader for Obama's health care bill, which will add trillions to the national debt, ration care, and destroy your ability to choose your own doctor and care you get. Now, all of a sudden-Nick sees the light, when Obama's policies, filtering through Obama's EPA, hit the mining industry. Wow. Voters, please, next election, you have got to take a careful look at Nick Rahall when he runs for Congress again. I will never vote for, or support him again. He endorsed Barack Obama-NEVER FORGET THAT!!!!
