CHAPMANVILLE — The Burch Lady Bulldogs basketball team handed the Chapmanville Regional High School Lady Tigers their first loss last night, 31-28, in Chapmanville.
Neither team shot the ball very well, with Burch hitting 32 percent of its shots and Chapmanville making just 19 percent.
The two teams traded the lead throughout much of the game before Burch finally put the game away in the final seconds.
The score was tied at 5 at the end of the first quarter, but the Lady Bulldogs outscored Chapmanville 11-8 to go up 16-13 at the half.
The Lady Tigers, though, outscored Burch 8-2 in the third quarter to take a 21-18 lead heading into the final stanza, but the Lady Dogs scored seven unanswered points — a jumper from Haley Church, four points from under the bucket by older sister, Hilary, and a free throw by Haley — in the final two minutes to reclaim the lead and get the win.
“I thought Chapmanville really did a good job putting pressure on us,” Burch Coach Melvin Cunningham said. “We still worked the ball around and had good looks at the rim, but we didn’t shoot the ball well. You have to make the shots in the paint and we didn’t do that. But, down the stretch, we did a great job of executing.”
Haley Church led all scorers with 11 points. She made it a double-double game with 12 rebounds. She also blocked two shots, got a steal and handed off an assist.
Next for Burch was Hilary Church with six points, six rebounds and a shot block. Kayla Cisco scored five points and pulled down 11 rebounds. Stephanie Brock netted four, grabbed five rebounds and gave two assists. Cheyenne Moore added three points, seven rebounds and two assists to the Burch totals. Kim Smith scored two, got three steals, grabbed a rebound and gave an assist. Bri Smith and Brittany Stumbo both saw action, but did not score.
The Lady Bulldogs sank 7-of-22 free throws and made 12-of-37 shots from the field.
“Cheyenne Moore came in and made a big difference because of her passing ability,” Cunningham said. “Stephanie Brock is definitely the difference in our defense. When she’s on the floor, we’re a much better defensive team and we also rebound better. Haley and Kayla did a great job getting on the boards. We’ll take an ugly win over a pretty loss any day.”
Chapmanville was led by Kelli Garrett with 10 points, including six of those from a pair of 3-pointers.
Lydia Vance scored seven for the Lady Tigers, Brittani Lowe and Jenna Vance each scored three, Jenna Evans added two and Allison Evans scored a foul toss. Lowe fouled out of the game with 4.5 seconds left.
The Lady Tigers made 11-of-21 foul shots and netted 7-of-36 field goals, including 3-of13 3-point shooting.
“We played awful. We played absolutely horrible basketball,” Chapmanville Coach David Williamson said. “You can’t get any worse than what we did tonight. They didn’t want to run what I drew up. They wanted to do their own thing out there and that killed us. Everyone who came into the game played terrible. If we don’t shoot any better than that, we’ll be lucky to win another ballgame. People are going to pack it in and make us chuck it and we’ll shoot them.
“We gambled and tried to steal the ball instead of just playing behind them and making them score and we gambled and gave them layups. The first half, we played terrible man-to-man defense. They ran the same set, a little baseline set, 10 or 12 times and we got beat on it 10 or 12 times.”
Both teams suffered from foul trouble early. In the first half, Burch had two players with a pair of fouls against them and one with three. By the fourth quarter, Burch had four players with four fouls each. Chapman-ville had four players with four each by the fourth quarter before Lowe fouled out.
The Lady Bulldogs improve to 2-1 with the win and will host Williamson on Thursday in Delbarton.
