Pike man makes 3rd death at Ky. mines in 2009

FRANKFORT, Ky. — A coal truck driver was killed over the weekend while leaving a mining site in Pike County the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) reported . MSHA officials say 52-year old Stevie Johnson of Virgie died early Saturday when his 10-wheel truck loaded with coal went out of control on a haul road. Officials say Johnson was thrown from the truck causing his fatal injuries. He was taken to Pikeville Medical Center where he was pronounced dead.

The mine is owned by Premier Elkhorn Coal Company and located in Virgie. The accident was reported at approximately 6:30 a.m. Officials from the Kentucky Office of Mine Safety and Licensing (OMSL) are continuing their investigation into the cause of the accident.
