Actress from Chattaroy passes in Fla.

Phyllis Workman Liptak, formerly Phyllis Boyens, recorded an album with her father, Nimrod Workman, entitled 'Passing Thru Garden'.


BRADENTON, Fla. — Singer and actress with local ties, Phyllis Sue Workman Liptak, passed away at her residence in Bradenton, Fla. Thursday, Dec. 9.

Born Feb. 22, 1947 in Lobata, she was the youngest of 13 children and born to Molly and Nimrod Workman.

Phyllis was best known for her portrayal of Clary Lynn in the 1980 movie “Coal Miner’s Daughter”, credited under her name at the time, Phyllis Boyens. She acted along side Sissy Spacek and Tommy Lee Jones who portrayed Loretta Lynn and her husband Mooney.

Phyllis was a coal miner’s daughter herself. Her father, Nimrod Workman, worked in Mingo County coal mines for 42 years before becoming a singer later in life. Phyllis appeared with her father in “Coal Miner’s Daughter” who can be heard leading the choir singing “Amazing Grace” in the movie.

The father and daughter duo released an album in 1975 on June Appal Recordings called “Passing Thru the Garden”.

Phyllis also appeared in the TV movie “The Dollmaker” in 1984 starring Jane Fonda.

Growing up in the Tug Valley, she has many relatives currently living in Mingo and Logan Counties as well as Martin County, Ky.

A memorial service will be held Dec. 15 at Harvest Chapel in Bradenton, Fla with funeral arrangements under the direction of Ft. Myers Memorial Gardens Funeral Home of Ft. Myers, Fla. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made in Phyllis’ name to Harvest Chapel.

Thank you for the lovely write up. Phyllis was my Aunt. She was a wonderful person, full of life. She loved her family and friends and we all loved her. She will be truly missed.
