The Gilbert High School cheerleading team won the Class A runner-up trophy Saturday afternoon in the state cheer competition in Charleston.
CHARLESTON -- The Gilbert High cheerleaders brought home the Class A state runner-up trophy Saturday afternoon from Charleston.

The Gilbert High cheerleaders finished as runners-up to Clay-Battelle, who was last year's runner-up.

Gilbert's three seniors said finishing as runner-up felt as good as winning the title.

"It feels really, really good," Rikka Collins said. "We have worked hard every day."

"It feels wonderful," Aimee Mitchell said. "It feels so good that I'm almost speechless."

"It feels as good as first place, though I'd gladly take the championship trophy, but this is just as awesome," Karissa Blackburn said.

Gilbert Coach Teresa Cline said her team finished runner-up despite some great competition.

"It feels like we won first," Cline said. "Clay-Battelle is awesome and so is Wheeling Central. To go against teams like that and beat either one of them, it's really an accomplishment for these girls. We're such a small school and we are so excited."

Gilbert Coach Jessica Houck said she is proud of her cheerleaders.

"They have worked so hard since August," Houck said. "This is a great group of girls. We just have one more year left at Gilbert High School and this is a great way to prepare to go out in style. This is a testament to the character, the hard work and determination of our students. We're really proud."

Gilbert finished with a score of 325.6, while state champ Clay-Battelle finished with a 331.5 score to win the competition.

Williamson High School, the regional runner-up to Gilbert, also competed in the state cheer competition, finishing with a score of 229.95.
