PARKERSBURG, W.Va. (AP) — The state Secondary School Activities Commission says it’s postponing the Class AA cheerleading championship because of a lawsuit involving Tolsia High School.

Wednesday’s decision follows a Wayne County Circuit Court decision that restored Tolsia to second place in the regional tournament, qualifying the squad for state this Saturday.

The commission says a penalty for an illegal and unsafe routine at regionals dropped Tolsia fourth and out of state. It’s considering appealing to the state Supreme Court.

Mike Ranson, a lawyer for the Wayne County school board, says the circuit court ruled correctly that a regional tournament judge violated commission rules by seeking help from a spectator. Ranson called the postponement “outrageous.”

Class A and AAA tournaments are proceeding as scheduled.
