State Rep. Keith Hall, D-Phelps, had earmarked at least $120,000 in coal-severance funds for the school to teach local history and produce historical narratives and plays.
The Lexington Herald-Leader reported Monday that nearly half of the money has been spent on sports gear, including uniforms, sneakers and a mascot costume.
The newspaper reported that thousands of dollars more went to ice cream snacks, jazz shoes, hair ribbons in the school colors, and various paper, hardware and electronics supplies for the school, some of which school officials recently said they could not account for.
School officials defended the expenditures, saying many of the purchases were used to teach history in play productions before being shared with the athletic department.
