PIKEVILLE, KY –Two new board members were sworn into the Pike County Board of Education Tuesday evening.
Two vacancies were created earlier this year with the resignations of J.C. Chaney in District Three and Bobby Varney in District Four. Dr. Charles “Chuck” Johnson from South Williamson was sworn in to replace Varney.
A practicing pediatrician, Dr. Johnson said he feels his daily interaction with children will help him understand the needs of Pike County students.
“I treat kids every day,” he said. “Not only for medical problems, but emotional, behavioral and academic issues as well. I think that will help me to serve the children of the county.”
Johnson attended Pike County schools throughout his primary school career. He is a graduate of South Williamson Grade School and Belfry High School. His children, Chaz and Mary Beth, attended Southside Elementary, Belfry Middle and Belfry High Schools, Chaz is currently a student at the University of Kentucky.
“My wife, Vicki, and I have been active in the school system ever since our children started school. I feel like this is an extension of that involvment.”
Johnson explained he has no specific plans in mind as of yet.
“I will just try to get acquainted with the Board,” he said. He added he has no plans in place beyond the term he is currently finishing,
Replacing J.C. Chaney to represent District Three is Frank Ratliff.
The new members will serve the remainder of the terms of those members they replaced, which will end in 2010
