ASHTON — The Burch Bulldogs finished the season with their best performance of the year, a 54-20 win over the homestanding Hannan Wildcats in Ashton, W.Va.

The Bulldogs scored six rushing touchdowns and two passing and three two-point conversions. They only fumbled the ball once during the game. The Bulldogs never punted the ball back to Hannan.

Burch only committed two turnovers the entire game.

The Dogs rushed for 323 yards on only 20 carries and gained 110 yards in the air.

With the win, Burch finished its season at .500, with a 5-5 record.

Cody Crum led the Bulldogs with three rushing touchdowns and two receiving scores. He rushed only six times for 182 yards, including TD runs of 37, nine and 35 yards, and his two catches were for touchdowns of four yards and 39, respectively.

Next was Steve Messer with three carries for 62 yards, including a 54-yard scoring run late in the game.

Trevor Woolum ran the ball twice for 40 yards, including a break-away, up-the-middle touchdown run for 38 yards. Jacob Butcher ran the ball three times on an injured ankle for 22 yards, including an 11-yard TD, and a two-point conversion. Dakota Dempsey carried the ball three times for 13 yards and scored a two-point conversion. Kyle King ran the ball once for four yards.

Quarterback Ryan Hatfield completed 5-of-9 passes for 110 yards. He hit Crum with two touchdown strikes and also passed successfully to Mike Burke for two-point conversion.

The point total was the highest for the Bulldogs since the 2005 season. It was also the highest for Hannah this year.

“This is a real nice win,” Burch Coach James “Butch” Joplin said. “We finished at .500 this year and I told my kids this is no accident that we did this. It’s because we got in the weight room and worked hard and I’m hoping that the guys who are coming back next year will get back in there and work hard again. I believe they really wanted it this week. They saw what happened to them last week and I think they wanted to make up for it this week.”

Last week, Burch saw its playoff hopes dashed when they lost to Big Creek, 24-18.

But, they got back on track Friday night to end the season on a high note.

Burch got on the board on their first possession following a big defensive stop at their own 1-yard-line that kept Hannan from ever getting the lead in the game. On the first play from the 1-yard-line, Crum zipped upfield for 47 yards and then, two plays later, he scrambled to the end zone for the first of his three TDs. Hatfield hit Burke with the two-point conversion pass and Burch led 8-0 with 6:17 left in the first quarter.

Burch’s next score was set up by Burke’s interception at the Hannah 43-yard-line. Hatfield hit Dempsey with a 39-yard pass and then connected with Crum for a four-yard TD. Dempsey ran in the two-point conversion to make it 16-0 with 4:32 left in the first quarter.

Hannan made a game of it when Pokey Worth scored a 13-yard touchdown and Jacob Taylor ran in the two-point conversion to make it 16-8 with 2:29 left in the first quarter.

But, that was as close as the Wildcats would get the rest of the contest.

Following a Hannan punt, Hatfield hit Crum with a 39-yard scoring pass with just 17.2 seconds left in the first quarter to give Burch a 22-8 lead.

Burch’s next score was by Crum, a nine-yard run at the 3:20 mark in the second quarter that gave the Dogs a 28-8 lead.

The Bulldogs scored on their next possession, this time, a 35-yard TD jaunt by Crum with only three seconds left in the first half. Butcher tacked on the two-point conversion to make it 36-8 just before halftime.

On the ensuing kickoff and with no time left on the clock, the Bulldogs nearly allowed Hannan to score again, but Crum ran down Daniel Reynolds, who had ran through Bulldogs defenders. Crum stopped him just shy of the goal line with no time left on the clock to save a touchdown.

Burch scored on its first possession of the second half, when, on fourth down and four on the Hannan 11-yard-line, Butcher ran in the 11-yard TD to make it 42-8.

Hannan scored its second touchdown of the night on its next possession as Taylor ran up the middle 46 yards to pay dirt to make it 42-14 with 5:53 left in the third period.

Burch scored on the next possession, as Woolum ran in for the 38-yard score that made it 48-14 with 4:52 left in the third.

The BUlldogs’ only turnover on downs resulted in Hannan’s final score of the game.

The Wildcats got the ball back on the Burch 44-yard-line and took it nine plays to the Bulldogs’ 6 and Jarrod Cobb ran in the TD to make it 48-20 with 4:46 left in the game.

Hannan attempted the onside kick, but Burch’s A.D. Muncy covered it on the Bulldogs’ own 46-yard-line and then Messer ran 54 yards untouched to the end zone to make it 54-20.

Hannan got as close as the Burch 6-yard-line on the next drive, but failed to convert the fourth-down play and the Bulldogs took over on downs and took a knee to run out the final 19 seconds of the game.

On defense for the Bulldogs, Gabriel Vinson led with eight solo tackles and six assists. Kyle King had six solo tackles and two assists. Austin Dempsey had five solos -- including a sack for a six-yard loss -- and four assists. Brandon King had four solos and three assists. Jacob Stratton and Mason Conley had three solo tackles each. Brandon Estep had two solos and four assists. John Varney had two solos and three assists. Butcher and Chase Dotson each had two solos. Crum had a solo tackle and three assists. Burke had one tackle, two assists and an interception. Muncy and Jonathan Diamond each had one solo and three assists. Blake Hall had one solo and two assists. Woolum and Tyler Layne each had a solo, while Quinton Yates had one assist.

Burch graduates eight players from this year’s team, including Hatfield, Woolum, Stratton, Crum, Dempsey, Maynard, Varney and Diamond.

“We lose a real good group of seniors,” Joplin said.”And we’ve got a real good group coming back.”
