McCARR, Ky. – Approximately 50 people braved the cold and rainy weather to attend the grand opening of the Hatfield-McCoy Park in McCarr on Saturday, Oct. 31.
Pike County Judge-Executive Wayne T. Rutherford addressed the crowd and told them how our local parks are important to communities in Pike County.
“Parks like this one are great to have,” he said. “They have something for everyone and people really enjoy them.”
Rutherford went on to talk about the adventure tourism scene in Pike and surrounding counties. He said in the very near future, people will be able to ride on four-wheeler trails in three different states with several of trail heads to be located in Pike County. In addition to the ATV trails, water tourism projects are being addressed.
“It will not be long before Pike County has one of the best river trail systems in country,” Rutherford added.
District 5 Magistrate Hilman Dotson told attendees that the park was a long time coming and he was elated to finally have another wonderful park in his district.
The Hatfield-McCoy Park has a loading and unloading area for canoes and kayaks to access the Tug Fork River. The park also boasts an outdoor theatre, two shelters with charcoal grills, a walking track, basketball court and a large playground with brand new equipment.
Those in attendance enjoyed food and live music from the band “Packin’ Up” and a prize was given away for best costume. Several children also won treat bags containing four tickets to the upcoming Sesame Street show at the East Kentucky Expo Center.
