WEST WILLIAMSON -- The Williamson Middle School Cubpack is in the Mingo County championship game after beating Matewan, 26-6, last night at Lefty Hamilton Park in West Williamson.

Cameron Justice scored first for the Cubpack on a seven-yard run and Tyler Salyers tossed the two-point conversion to Alex Lee to give Williamson an 8-0 lead early in the first quarter.

Matewan cut its deficit when Chance Lester scored the Tigers’ only touchdown of the night in the first period to make it 8-6.

But, that was as close as Matewan would get to the Cubpack lead.

Williamson started the second quarter with a 60-yard TD run by Darrien Browning that made it 14-6.

The Cubpack continued to mount a large lead when at the start of the third frame, Browning scored on a 95-yard jaunt to make it 20-6.

Williamson then drove in the final nail late in the game when Salyers tossed a 15-yard scoring strike to Lee.

Williamson Coach Alonzo Varney said he’s pleased that his team is in the county championship for the first time in several years.

“This is amazing,” Varney said. “I had a feeling at the start of the season that we had something special. It’s been so long since we’ve been in the county championship. I’m so proud of my guys.”

Matewan Coach Jimmy Keatley said seven of his key players were playing sick.

“We came out and gave what they had left in them,” Keatley said. “We got 100 percent out of them, but they were only at about 60 percent. These are a great bunch of kids. We’re going to get back at it again next year. Good luck to Williamson.”

The Tigers finish the season with a 4-4 record.

Williamson improves to 5-3 with the win and will play in the county championship next week against the winner of the Kermit-Gilbert game set for tonight.
