CHARLESTON (AP) — Environmental activists trying to stop blasting on the Coal River Mountain have taken the fight over mountaintop removal mining to Gov. Joe Manchin.

About 20 people showed up noon Monday at the governor's Capitol reception room. They delivered a letter from 13 residents asking him to to declare a state of emergency and stop blasting they fear could threaten the massive Brushy Fork sludge dam.

After speaking with Manchin for about 20 minutes, seven of them took seats on the floor.

Climate Ground Zero says it's the 16th action this year in a campaign of civil disobedience resulting in more than 100 arrests.

Virginia-based Massey Energy has permits to mine at Coal River Mountain. Environmentalists advocate a windmill farm and underground mining only.
