There are some big events set for tonight’s Morgantown Trinity Christian at Williamson football game.

Gametime is set for 6 p.m. at Lefty Hamilton Park in West Williamson and prior to the game, the 1990 WHS football playoff team that went to the playoffs and finished 8-3 will be honored, according to Williamson High School Football Coach Doug Ward.

The pre-game toss will be done by Keith Tyler of the Fellowship of Christian Athletes, along with members of the Mingo County Commission, which will present funds for the Williamson Athletic Committee (WAC) and the Williamson Midget League.

“It’s the WAC night because they have done so much for us,” Ward said.

Tyler will also give an overview of the FCA and its purpose at halftime, Ward said.

“Keith was an All-America basketball player at the University of Charleston and he went to camp with the Lakers,” Ward said. “When Skip Henderson was playing at Marshall and his senior year they were supposed to be so good, they went to the Charleston Civic Center and played and Keith almost beat them by himself. He put up 39 on them and they upset Marshall in that first game. He’s the regional director for the FCA out of Charleston and he covers our area. We’re going to have some giveaways of literature during the game. After the game, we’re going to have a community cookout and feeding Morgantown Trinity and anyone who wants to stay and eat. We’ve got a lot of activities going on.”

Ward said he is trying to address the spiritual aspect of life, something he said is missing in today’s society.

“Spiritually, there are a lot of holes because you have people who don’t attend church and it’s not a priority for them. We try to teach people how to act right,” Ward said. “I think we’ve made some strides in that direction and I’ve seen some change of character overall and I think our school climate has changed as a result of kids taking on some responsibility. We’re just trying to do some things to draw attention to the organization and to honor Christ. The kids need to know that God loves them and there’s a plan for their lives. That’s something I’ve always tried to make a part of my program, wherever I’ve been.”

The Wolfpack players will be busy tomorrow, not only with the game, but also doing some volunteer work at Ward’s church.

Before the game at Memorial Methodist in West Williamson, at noon, the church will host a communitywide dinner which will be served by the WHS football players.

“Our church does that regularly and our kids are going to help serve the meal,” Ward said. “With all that’s going on, no one in Williamson should go hungry tomorrow.”

Ward said every Thursday at 6 p.m., his church feeds all the WHS football players and a Williamson-area church comes in and does a devotional service with players. Anyone who wants to come and take part in that is welcome to attend, Ward said.

“We’ve been doing that for the four years since I’ve been here,” Ward said. “If anyone is interested in doing that they can contact me at Williamson Middle School.”
