The Gilbert Lions dominated the Big Creek Owls at their homecoming Friday night, winning 42-6. The Lions were untouchable until fourth quarter when the Owls scored their first touchdown of the night.

Gilbert Head Coach Gordan Carter said the boys weren’t making the mistakes they had made in previous games played including a lack of turning over the ball. Carter said there are still some aspects the team could do better but he was seeing an improvement.

The Coach explained the team had always been offensively strong but defensively it had been lacking especially in their some of the more competitive games.

Coach Carter also contributed the win partly to returning Lions’ Quarterback Cameron Ellis who injured early on in the game against Wyoming County’s Westside High, along with a few other players.

“Corey Robinette did a good job on defense and Josh Carter, Cameron Ellis and Josh Dingess all ran the ball good,” explained the Coach. “When we put Brandon Cline he did a really good job.”

“Tonight I think we had some fun and just enjoyed playing and that is what you got to do,” said Carter. “We knew that Big Creek was going to be a young football team  and they lost some good kids last year and anytime that happens it will be tough for you to win football games.”

Carter said that although there is an evident improvement, he is making no predictions whether Gilbert will end up in the playoffs this year.

“We are not looking that far yet,” said Carter. “We have Man and Matewan back to back so playing those two football teams is a tough chore in itself.”

Next week the team will go up against the Man Hillbilles.
