The Pike County Health Department reported being notified of the first positive case of H1N1.
A pregnant Pike County resident presented herself at a routine prenatal visit with flu-like symptoms, the health department reported. Upon receiving a positive result for the rapid Type A flu test, a sample was sent to the state lab for further testing. The results proved to be positive for H1N1.
"Even though we have seen suspicious positive type A flu in Pike County, this is the first positive case to meet the CDC’s criteria for further testing," Pike health officials said. "If you or a loved one tests positive for type A flu, the treatment for seasonal and H1N1 are typically the same."
Similarly, the methods of prevention for the two types of flu are the same. The best practices to stop the spread of germs are cough or sneeze into your sleeve, remember not to touch your eyes or mouth, wash your hands often, when soap and water are not available, alcohol-based hand sanitizers may be used, stay home if you are sick, avoid contact with those known to be sick, stay home until the fever has been gone for 24 hours without medication, get yourself vaccinated against the flu, both seasonal and H1N1. Lastly, remind your children to practice these healthy habits too.
