CHARLESTON (AP) — West Virginia’s Department of Environmental Protection says Consol Energy has agreed to stop injecting wastewater from coalbed methane gas wells into a mine near the scene of fish kills in a creek along the Pennsylvania border.

The DEP says the agreement announced Friday involves Canonsburg, Pa.-based Con-sol’s Blacksville No. 1 mine in Monongalia County. DEP says stopping the injections will help determine if wastewater was increasing pollution discharges from Consol’s Blacks-ville No. 2 mine.

Consol did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

DEP says it and Consol also have found more evidence of potentially toxic algae blooms in Dunkard Creek. The agency has blamed algae for killing fish, mussels, salamanders and other aquatic life along a 38-mile stretch of the creek.
