WILLIAMSON – A man accused to killing his estranged wife and disposing of her body in a remote area of Mingo County was denied bond by Circuit Court Judge Michael Thornsbury Thursday morning.

A public defender requested bond on behalf of Roger Stroud, saying Stroud was a Mingo County property owner and didn’t resist arrest. He added Stroud has ties to the community, having been employed by Massey Energy since 2001.

However, Mingo prosecutor Michael Sparks argued that the case involved a capital crime, which as brutal, violent and premeditated. He said evidence of the defendant’s guilt was overwhelming, and Stroud had the resources to be a flight risk.

Judge Thornsbury denied bond.

According to the criminal complaint, Stroud admitted to authorities he shot his wife, Vadie Michelle Maynard Stroud, 29, and placed her body in a refrigerator he had in the back of his truck, and dumped it at Kermit Coal Company.

The body was found by one of several family members who had formed a search party to look for the young woman.
